When a place is great, it just clicks. We know it. You know it. These are the places we remember most vividly, the places where serendipitous things always seem to happen, the places to which we return—in the stories we tell if not in person—all throughout our lives.
We are proud to announce that Public Markets will be the first installment of our updated Great Public Spaces resource. To get us started, we’ve chosen 24 examples of Great Public Markets from around the world. This is just the beginning, however, and as we continue the process of documenting and honoring the world’s best public markets, we need your help! Is there a place in your community that deserves notice? Have you just returned from a trip, impressed by the markets of a faraway city? We want to know about it!
As we lead up to the 9th International Public Markets Conference in Barcelona this coming March, this focus on Great Public Markets is especially fitting. Over three days the world’s leading public market operators, developers, and thought-leaders will experience how Barcelona succeeds as a Market City—an area where no resident is ever more than a ten-minute walk from a market.
Together—through this online resource and international gathering—we will further understand what public markets can be for communities worldwide. As we continue to grow this resource, we want your input on what makes a great place, and we look forward to your contributions to our Great Public Spaces site.
