Located directly on La Rambla, a massive tree-lined pedestrian zone that makes up Barcelona’s central boulevard, the historic market is a feast for the senses, with well-lit stalls showcasing the best and freshest food in Catalonia. A “gastronomic temple,” as local chefs refer to it, visitors can find ingredients ranging from octopus, inkfish, anchovies, rabbit, head cheese, olives, and huge selections of candies and spices.
Surrounding the market are an assortment of cafés, bars, and local food stands where locals and tourists alike can pull up a barstool, relax, people-watch, and enjoy the daily bustle of the market. La Boqueria is a vital part of Barcelona’s economy and community, and it is easily accessible by public metro (Liceu station) and bus.
La Boqueria will host the 9th Annual International Public Markets Conference on March 25-28, 2015.
Officially opened in 1840, but with a history dating back as far as 1217, La Boqueria is one of the oldest and most famous public markets in Europe. Part train station and part warehouse, with its seemingly endless grid of shops and stalls, La Boqueria is a culinary and community destination.
