A recent exhibit at the National Gallery of Art called "Pride of Place: Dutch Cityscapes of the Golden Age" kept reminding me of the principles PPS espouses. First there was this great look at the role of the stoop in Dutch public life. And then I happened upon this 1615 painting by Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne: "Middleburg with the Departure of a Dignitary." I realized it's a great example, from nearly 400 years ago, of exactly the kind of "complete street" we advocate for... Only instead of balancing the needs of pedestrians with cars and bikes, it's balancing the needs of pedestrians with horses and boats:
