2009 Making Places Update: In 2008, skyrocketing fuel prices led to a nation-wide awakening on the importance of freedom from oil dependency. Even as fuel prices dropped in early 2009, public transit ridership reached its highest volume in 52 years. People, it seems, have begun to protest against cars with the help of Placemaking. PPS’s Building Community through Transportation initiative, plus partnerships with the Smart Growth Network and Transportation for America help lead the way.
Canadian cities and towns are adapting Placemaking practices around the country. In 2008, based on an evaluation and project with PPS, the city of Mississauga began construction of a new park, and plans for town square revitalization is planned for 2009. Canadian libraries are turning themselves inside out, remaking themselves into true civic destinations. And PPS is now a proud partner with the Municipal Cultural Planning Partnership of Ontario, an organization dedicated to culture and cultural institutions positively affecting local economies and communities.
2009 Making Places Update:
Placemaking received a considerable amount of press in the last year, most notably in a ULI Magazine feature article about Placemaking around the world, authored by PPS’s Fred Kent. Additionally, Placemaking initiatives have been undertaken in places as diverse as Asia and Australia, in addition to Central and Eastern Europe.
2009 Making Places Update:
With a new administration in the White House, first lady Michelle Obama is making plans for an extensive (and yet inexpensive) White House garden, showcasing that the “people’s lawn” can be used for something healthy, active and social. Meanwhile, the number of farmers markets has increased 6% over the last two years. Additionally, PPS will host its 7th International Public Markets Conference on April 24-26 in San Francisco, focusing on how public markets reconnect local economies and communities
