Lake Hefner is a large lake in the middle of northwest Oklahoma City with trails for running, biking, and other recreational activities. Picnic tables and playgrounds create an environment families can spend afternoons enjoying. The lake also offers a public golf course and three popular restaurants.
With 2,500 surface acres, Lake Hefner is accessible from many main roads including Hefner Road, Britton Road, and Portland Avenue. Approximately nine miles of trails and sidewalks surround the lake, all in good condition for activity. Sidewalks are being built around Oklahoma City in order to connect with Lake Hefner more completely.
The clean, well-kept image of Lake Hefner is inviting to Oklahoma City residents. Parking is available at many areas, though the presence of cars never overpowers the look of the lake or the generally natural feel of the space. Trash is not an issue, even with the successful restaurants located near the biking trails. Safety measures include prohibiting weapons and fire.
Whether golfing at the Hefner Golf Course, jogging on the trails, or eating at one of the restaurants such as Red Rock Canyon Grill and PearlÍs Lakeside, Lake Hefner is always in use. Even if it is simply providing water to Oklahoma City and some of its suburbs.
The feel of Lake Hefner is friendly with walkers waving as they pass one another. It is not uncommon for groups to meet there or friends to spend an afternoon rolling blading around the lake. Citizens of the area tend to feel a bond with Hefner Lake as many spend years growing up knowing the location as a place for recreation and relaxation and creating memories there.
