Public Gardens on historic stone arch bridge over Willimantic River \nURLS:\n

What makes it Great?

Why it doesn't work?

The Garden on the Bridge was designed to create a park-like quality, welcoming visitors to this unique and special place. Captivating colored pavers and hand built stone planters form the hardscape. The garden features a number of massive containers with a mixture of shrubs and trees which will form the backbone for future plantings. Perennial and annual plantings have been selected for their ability to enhance and thrive in this unique environment. Like any garden, plantings will change over time.

Access & Linkages

The Garden on the bridge is located between the Windham Mills Complex and Artspace Apartments. It connects the south end of Willimantic with downtown and is fully accessible. The sidewalks/path are multi-colored paver bricks patterned after the thread spools from the American Thread Compnay

Comfort & Image

The 3.0 acres which comprise the site are visually stunning with hanging plants, river views, mill views, archways, hand made granite planters and many seating areas. The area is not accessible to public vehicles.

Uses & Activities

People use the space regualrly. The Garden Club of Windham has taken on the task of the upkeep of the flower beds with assistance from the University of CT Master Gardner Program, and the Town of Windham public works department

Sociability

The space is now considered a tourist destination in Eastern Ct and has recently been designed a "Treasure of the Valley" by the Quinebaug & Shetucket National Heritage Corridor. Many people come and visit as well as local groups having small events on the bridge.
