What makes it Great?

Why it doesn't work?

A 7-acre urban park nestled in the University Circle Cultural District between the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and the Cleveland Botanical Garden. It has recently received a $1.4M makeover and now is equipped with new walkways, lighting, benches, drinking fountain (and doggie fountain too), and a performance stage with power.

Access & Linkages

It ties in well with the surrounding museums by having them "spill" over into the parkland. People (visitors, employees, etc.) all use the space day and night. It almost acts like a mall connecting three of Cleveland's finest museums. It is accessible on foot, by transit (community circulator, bus, rail), by bicycle (connected to regional bikeway), and also has abundant on-street parking nearby to encourage use. The roads surrounding the parkland are 15MPH parkland paths... not city streets. The paths are blasted sandstone with a brick trimming.

Comfort & Image

There are all ages and types of users. It is abundant with natural and man-made seating. It is incredibly clean, while the viewpaths almost pull the visitor into the space.

Sociability

The mood is a reflection of what is around it... the freedom to express oneself and explore. The park is used by nearby employees, residents, students, and visitors. It is often used in large groups as well as individually. The local pride in the space is tremendous, with the various institutions surrounding the space using it as their front lawn. The stage definitely draws meetings and gives people a "place" to go and meet. The ratio of locals to visitors is 50/50.
