The Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Center for Transformative Placemaking aims to inspire public, private, and civic sector leaders to make transformative place investments that generate widespread social and economic benefits.
In 2018, the Brookings Institution launched the Bass Center for Transformative Placemaking with Project for Public Spaces and the National Main Street Center as founding partners. The Center focuses on a broad range of regionally significant economic districts, and particularly, place-based strategies that serve people who are often left out of traditional approaches to urban revitalization.
Since then, Project for Public Spaces has worked with the Bass Center to publish several reports and innovative stories from the field that demonstrate the value of transformative placemaking, including:
This work builds on a collaboration that began in 2015 when Project for Public Spaces joined forces with the Brookings Institution to launch the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Initiative for Innovation and Placemaking. The Bass Initiative built on Brookings’ pioneering research on innovation districts—dense, amenity-rich areas that are typically anchored by research institutions or knowledge-intensive corporations as well as startups and intermediary organizations—and Project for Public Spaces’ long track record in placemaking.
Through research, on-the-ground projects, and analytic and policy tools, the initiative catalyzed a new form of city building that fosters cross-disciplinary approaches to urban growth and development. Key publications and reports that emerged from this collaboration include:
