In 2014, DTE Energy began redeveloping a triangular, 1.5-acre parking lot by their office building into a vibrant destination for Downtown Detroit. Project for Public Spaces organized a series of public workshops, focus groups, and popup placemaking activities to discuss challenges and stimulate discussion around the triangle’s potential uses. Acknowledging the audience, the team organized these exercises around the area’s nine-to-five crowd by focusing on lunchtime and happy hour events. The resulting insights informed discussions between the client and project architects to create a holistic design approach.
In collaboration with the design team, Project for Public Spaces formulated a vision and design concept for the future park. Project for Public Spaces also provided programming recommendations and connected the design team to potential partners and stakeholders to engage in the space’s ongoing development. Project for Public Spaces continued its involvement past the planning stage as a key consultant in the design process. Beacon Park, managed by the Detroit Downtown Partnership, opened in the summer of 2017 and immediately became a hub for activity in downtown Detroit.
